The column-span property seems like a band-aid fix for a deeper layout issue. Simplifying the system would be more effective than tacking on more complexity.

Seems like CSS is getting too complicated. Why do we need a column-span property for multi-column layouts? Cant we just stick to the basics and keep it simple? Seems like unnecessary complexity to me.
