Isnt it possible that 123Reg intentionally leaked customer data to create a buzz and boost their brand? Seems like a risky move, but hey, any publicity is good publicity, right?

Its a bold theory, but intentionally leaking customer data for publicity would be a major breach of trust. The potential backlash far outweighs any short-term gain. Lets hope it was just a genuine mistake.
